[unpaid/sample] Mavala launched a range of twelve ‘bio’ nail polishes in April containing 85% natural ingredients. Achieving 100% natural nail polishes with the desired performance level is currently not feasible, but advancements in this area are anticipated. It’s important to note that the new nail wheels ordered have a matte finish, but these polishes retain a glossy appearance as expected.

Other nail brands have also ventured into creating more natural formulas. Kure Bazaar, a long-standing favorite nail brand, has made strides in offering less ‘toxic’ nail polishes. Mavala’s collections are often named after rivers, following the same pattern here.

Mavala Bio utilizes plant and mineral-based raw materials such as corn, crushed clay, rice, sugar cane, and wood pulp. The use of bio-sourced solvents from renewable sources is environmentally friendly compared to petrochemical-based solvents. When ‘breathable’ is mentioned in a nail polish’s ingredient list, it indicates water permeability, allowing air and water molecules to pass through. This feature is sometimes marketed as ‘halal.’ The formula is likened to contact lenses that enable oxygen to permeate, potentially allowing nail oil molecules to condition the nails, although the efficacy of this process is uncertain. Notably, nails do not ‘breathe’ themselves.

The color range from left to right on the wheel includes Murray, Nile, Thames, Amazonas, Volta, and Colorado. Embracing bio-sourcing is the way forward as nail polish, while not a major environmental concern on its own, contributes significantly to sales. Mavala polishes also incorporate silica, potentially aiding in nail strengthening. The polishes are currently priced at £5.61 as part of an offer at Sephora HERE.
