This is not a paid promotion. I recently shared these blushes on Instagram, sparking surprise about the return of Mary Quant makeup. Although it may have seemed dormant, Mary Quant has consistently maintained a presence, with a shop at Duke of York Square a few years ago, and a recent exhibition. However, last year, it seemed to have gone into hibernation. Upon ownership changes in 2000, the company is now named Mary Quant Cosmetics Ltd, with branches in London and Japan. James Matsumiya, the former company director, has been succeeded by Yukari Nakamaya and Masako Nakamaya. Yet, more detailed ownership information is challenging to track down.
Following a recent period of inactivity, Mary Quant is now back and thriving. Among the products I will be reviewing, I’m starting with the Cheeky Baby Souffle Blush. These blushes initially appear densely pigmented, but upon application, they provide a translucent, natural, and fresh finish.
Under Japanese ownership, the makeup carries a distinctively Japanese aesthetic. The shades I have are 01 Apple Red, 04 Candy Pink, and 02 Apricot Orange. The “pinched cheeks” look, significant in Asia, is a beautiful way to wear blush, further reflecting the Japanese influence.
When applying the Apricot Orange on my right cheek and Candy Pink on my left, the blushes lend a vibrant and fresh appearance without being overpowering.
In the swatch from bottom to top, Candy Pink, Apricot Orange, and Apple Red deliver a light and natural appearance. Priced at £23 each, they are available here. There are three other shades apart from these. The blush is understated and easy to wear, suitable for bare skin or over makeup. Applying it with a brush allows for a buildable coverage. It also has a staining element, ensuring long-lasting wear. However, it adheres better to bare skin than over foundation or base. I would love to hear your thoughts. Did you have a favorite Mary Quant product from the past?
