[unpaid/purchase/affiliate/ad] I regret discovering the Sephora Korean Beauty page – these light SPFs are irresistible to me. I purchased the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice & Probiotics cream not at Sephora, but at a store named Pure Seoul on Charing Cross Road. The store is turning into an Asian food and beauty hub, and that’s how I ended up with this smaller tube. Try-me sizes are more tempting to me than the fancy donuts from the nearby shop (although I couldn’t resist those either!)

Beauty of Joseon is a new brand established by Sumin Lee in 2018. The brand’s inspiration stems from a book called “Gyuhap chongseo” authored by Yi Bingheogak, a female scholar from the Joseon Dynasty’s Realist School of Confucianism. This book provided advice on skincare for women, with ancient herbal beauty recipes that are not far off from modern skincare needs. By modernizing these heritage formulas based on medicinal herbal books and research, Beauty of Joseon creates its current formulations. The Joseon dynasty, the context of the brand’s heritage, was the final dynastic kingdom of Korea from 1392 to 1897, shaping Korean culture significantly.

The name of this SPF provides a clear description of its key elements, with a focus on sensitive skin and meaningful use of actives. Ginseng, known for reducing inflammation, strengthening the skin barrier, and enhancing hydration, is a common ingredient. The Relief Sun Rice & Probiotics SPF cream is a chemical sunscreen enriched with 30% rice extracts and grain probiotics to balance the skin’s microbiome. It is ultra-lightweight, feels weightless on the skin, and provides hydration. I am currently using it and plan to purchase a larger size later on. The 50ml tube, priced at £16 HERE, demonstrates that quality facial SPF doesn’t have to break the bank.
